Elysian Institute Bigfork Wellness and Recovery Retreat

There’s something about Montana that demands more from us.

The mountains call us to climb higher. The trails beckon us to bike/run harder, the rivers challenge us to paddle, the golf courses to drive farther.  And when winter blankets the valley, the slopes dare us to carve one more run, push one more limit, test one more boundary.

We understand that feeling. We’ve felt it too. That drive to show up fully, for the adventure, for the family, for the life we’re building here in the Flathead Valley. But here’s what we’ve also learned: the body that moves mountains needs somewhere to recover.

That’s why Elysian Institute exists.

More Than a Place. A Partner in Your Journey.

We’re not here to sell you something you don’t need. We’re not here to promise miracles or quick fixes. We’re here because we saw a gap between the clinical coldness of medical facilities and the temporary relief of traditional spas. Between what Montana demands and what was available to help you meet those demands.

For 33 years, Montana Athletic Club has been where this community comes to move, to strengthen, to connect. We’ve watched you bike mountain trails, train hard at the MAC, prepare for ski season (water AND snow) and then chase your kids around the gym. You refuse to let age define what you’re capable of. Every single day, you show up and do the work.

But movement is only half the equation. Recovery is where we can help. It’s where overworked muscle fibers rebuild stronger. Where inflammation subsides and pain releases its grip. Where your nervous system downshifts from survival mode to thriving mode. Where your cells—literally, your cells—get the support they need to keep you in the daily grind, no matter what your game is.

That’s where we come in.

Who We Are (And Who We’re Not)

We’re not a spa or a salon, not a single service recovery store front, we’re a full-on wellness institute and yes, that distinction matters.

While spas/salons offer relaxation and indulgence (wonderful things, don’t get us wrong), we offer something different: science-backed therapies administered by seasoned medical professionals.

Our team includes Nurse Practitioners, like our Medical Director, Kate Mahlum, along with Registered Nurses, and Certified Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Technicians. Every treatment, every protocol, every recommendation is rooted in proven medical principles.

But this is what makes us different from a rote clinical setting: we actually care about how you feel. Not just your symptoms. Not just your diagnosis. You. Your story. Your goals. What keeps you up at night. What gets you out of bed in the morning. Why you’re here and what you’re hoping to achieve. We don’t just treat symptoms … We understand you. We don’t shove an IV in your arm and send you on your way. We sit down with you. We listen. We create a plan that’s designed for your life.

What We’ve Built for You

Walk into Elysian Institute and you’ll notice something immediately: this doesn’t feel like a medical facility. Clean lines and natural materials abound. A space that honors the landscape we call home while housing some of the most advanced recovery technologies available anywhere.

Every therapy we offer exists for one reason: to help you feel like yourself again. To help you move without pain. To help you sleep through the night. To help you show up for your life with the energy and vitality you remember having and maybe even better than before.

The Elysian Difference: Science Meets Soul

Here’s what you need to know about how we work:

First, we listen. Before we recommend a single treatment, we want to understand your health history, your current challenges, your goals, and what you’ve already tried. What worked? What didn’t? What put you off? What treatment thrilled you?

Second, we educate. We’ll never ask you to trust a treatment you don’t understand. Want to know exactly what happens to your body at -125F? We’ll explain the science.

Third, we personalize. The same treatment that transforms one person’s chronic pain might be completely wrong for someone else. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all protocols. We believe in you-sized solutions.

Fourth, we follow up. How did that session feel? Are you noticing changes? Do we need to adjust the approach? Your recovery journey isn’t a transaction, it’s a relationship. We’re in this with you for the long haul. Knowledge builds trust, and trust builds results.

Built for This Community

We’ve structured our pricing to be genuinely accessible to the Flathead Valley community. After all, if you can’t afford the treatments, how do we stay in business?

We’re here because Doug and Nancy Mahlum, after 33 years of working  with the community through Montana Athletic Club, saw a need.

They saw people pushing their bodies to the limit—on the course, in the gym, on the job, in their daily lives—with nowhere to turn for comprehensive recovery support.

They saw you. And they built this for you.

An Invitation, Not a Sales Pitch

We’re not going to pressure you. We’re not going to flood your inbox with aggressive marketing. We’re not going to make wild promises about overnight transformations.

What we will do is this: We’ll be here when you’re ready.

Maybe you’ve been dealing with chronic pain for years and you’re finally at the point where you need to try something different. Maybe you’re training for something big and you want every possible advantage.

Maybe you’re just exhausted! Physically, mentally, emotionally and you need a reset.

Whatever brought you here, we see you. And we’re ready to help.

Come visit us. Take a tour. Ask questions. Meet our team. Feel the space. No commitment, no pressure, just genuine conversation about what you need and whether we can help.

Because at the end of the day, wellness isn’t about fancy equipment or trendy treatments. It’s about having a place where people actually care about helping you feel like yourself again. Where medical expertise meets Bigfork hospitality. Where science supports your journey instead of intimidating you. Where recovery becomes less of a luxury and more of a lifestyle.

The Road Ahead: Walking It Together
